Fanuc 522 - Spindle encoder error

SPINDLE ENCODER ERROR

Fanuc spindle alarm 522: SPINDLE ENCODER ERROR. The spindle drive or spindle motor has detected a fault condition that requires diagnosis before spindle operation can resume.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 522 indicates the spindle drive (amplifier) is not receiving proper feedback signals from the spindle encoder. This typically occurs due to encoder wiring issues, encoder hardware failure, or incorrect parameter settings following maintenance or component replacement.

Safety

  • Verify corrected program or parameters before resuming machining

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Power down the machine and lock out per safety procedures. Inspect the encoder cable at both the spindle motor and drive ends for loose connections, bent pins, or corrosion.

LOCKOUT/TAGOUT required - high voltage present at spindle drive

  2. 2

Check encoder cable routing for damage, pinch points, or areas where coolant may have penetrated. Look for oil-soaked or discolored cable jackets.

  3. 3

Disconnect encoder cable and inspect connector pins for damage or contamination. Clean with electrical contact cleaner if necessary. Check for proper seating and locking of connectors.

  4. 4

Measure encoder cable continuity and resistance between motor and drive. Check for shorts between signal lines and ground. Replace cable if values are out of specification.
