Fanuc Alarm 351 - CANNOT USE SYNC CONTROL BECAUSE AXIS IS MOVING

CANNOT USE SYNC CONTROL BECAUSE AXIS IS MOVING

Fanuc PS351: A synchronous control command was issued for an axis that is currently in motion. Synchronous control cannot be activated while the target axis is moving.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 351 occurs when the system attempts to activate or deactivate synchronous control (tandem, gantry, or master-slave axis configuration) while one or more axes involved in the synchronization are already in motion. The synchronous control enable/disable command (typically via G-code, M-code, or PMC signal) must only be issued when all participating axes are stationary and servo-ready.

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Check the part program around the alarm occurrence. Look for synchronous control commands (G51.1 for tandem axis enable, G50.1 for tandem disable, or custom M-codes) and verify a G04 dwell or M00 stop precedes the command to ensure complete axis settling.

  2. 2

Navigate to SYSTEM > DIAGNOSIS and check diagnostic number 300 (servo position deviation) for the axes involved in synchronous control. Non-zero values indicate the axis has not reached the commanded position and is still settling.

  3. 3

Review parameters 8131-8134 (tandem control axis numbers) and 8135-8138 (tandem control slave axis numbers) to identify which axes are configured for synchronous operation. Verify these axes show zero velocity on the CURRENT POSITION screen before synchronous commands are issued.

  4. 4

If using PMC control for synchronous enable/disable, examine the PMC ladder (PMCLAD screen) for the synchronous control request signal timing. Add interlock logic requiring in-position signal (G signal G0007 bit for each axis) and velocity zero confirmation before toggling synchronous control activation.

Ensure PMC ladder changes are backed up and tested in single-block mode before production use.

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Servo following errors persist after mechanical inspection
  • ·PMC ladder logic modifications required
  • ·Synchronous control parameters need machine-specific tuning

Prevention

  • Always use G04 P0 before synchronous control commands
  • Regularly monitor servo following errors
  • Implement proper motion completion checks in NC programs
  • Maintain mechanical systems to prevent binding

Common Mistakes

  • Assuming visual axis stop means electronic stop
  • Modifying sync parameters without understanding machine configuration
  • Ignoring servo following error trends
  • Not clearing motion buffers after program interruption
