Fanuc Alarm 353 - INSTRUCTION FOR AXIS THAT CANNOT MOVE

ILLEGAL COMMAND FOR DISABLED AXIS

A move command was executed for an axis that is disabled, a slave axis in synchronous control, or an axis in composite control with bit 7 of parameter No. 8162 set to 1.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 353 occurs when the control system receives a movement command (G00, G01, or other axis motion) for an axis that is currently prohibited from moving. This typically happens when an axis is disabled via parameter No. 1023, when an axis is configured as a slave in a tandem/synchronous control setup, or when composite control parameter No. 8162 bit 7 prevents independent axis motion.

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Navigate to SYSTEM > PARAM and display parameter No. 1023. Check the bit pattern to verify which axes are enabled (bit=1) or disabled (bit=0). Bit 0=1st axis, Bit 1=2nd axis, etc.

  2. 2

If the axis being commanded is disabled (bit=0), enable it by setting the corresponding bit to 1 in parameter No. 1023. Ensure you have parameter write enable (PWE) active.

Changing parameter No. 1023 requires a machine restart. Verify machine configuration before re-enabling axes.

  3. 3

Review the part program to confirm the G-code is not attempting to move an axis that should remain disabled for this machine configuration.

  4. 4

After parameter modification, cycle power to the CNC and verify axis movement with manual jog or MDI testing before running production programs.

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Parameter changes don't resolve the issue
  • ·Servo amplifier hardware faults detected
  • ·Safety system modifications required

Prevention

  • Regularly verify axis enable parameters during setup
  • Document synchronous control configurations clearly
  • Train operators on proper coordinate system usage

Common Mistakes

  • Attempting to move slave axes directly in sync control
  • Forgetting to enable servo after parameter changes
  • Not checking composite control status before individual axis commands
