Fanuc Alarm 348 - TOOL CHANGE Z AXIS POS NOT ESTABLISHED

SYSTEM ALARM 348

Fanuc alarm 348: SYSTEM ALARM 348. This alarm indicates a fault condition detected by the Fanuc control. Refer to the alarm number and name to identify the specific system or function involved.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 348 occurs when the CNC detects a tool change command (M06 or automatic tool change) but the Z-axis is not at the designated tool change position as defined by the machine parameter settings. This is a safety interlock to prevent tool changer operation when the spindle Z-axis position could cause interference or collision.

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Navigate to SYSTEM > PARAM and check Parameter 1241 (tool change position Z-axis). Verify it matches the actual mechanical tool change position in machine coordinates.

  2. 2

Check Parameter 1240 (bit 0 - TCP) to verify tool change position check is enabled. If bit 0 = 1, the system requires Z-axis to be at the specified position.

  3. 3

Verify Parameter 1250 (in-position width for tool change) is set appropriately (typically 0.5mm to 2.0mm). If too narrow, the system may fail to recognize correct positioning.

  4. 4

After parameter verification, perform a manual Z-axis move to the tool change position and attempt M06. If alarm persists, check position encoder feedback on DIAGNOSIS > CURRENT POSITION screen to confirm absolute position is correct.

Always enable parameter write enable switch (PWE) before changing parameters. Power cycle required after parameter changes.

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Servo amplifier replacement needed
  • ·Encoder replacement required
  • ·Tool changer mechanical repair needed
  • ·Parameter corruption requiring factory reset

Prevention

  • Regular reference return after power cycles
  • Periodic backup of parameters
  • Routine tool changer maintenance
  • Monitor servo system performance

Common Mistakes

  • Attempting tool change without proper reference return
  • Ignoring related servo alarms
  • Incorrect parameter modification without backup
  • Not checking spindle orientation before tool change
