Fanuc Alarm 070 - Program Memory Full

Memory Overflow

Fanuc program alarm 070: Memory Overflow. The part program contains an error or illegal condition that the Fanuc control cannot execute. Correct the program to clear this alarm.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 070 occurs when the CNC's program memory is insufficient to register or store a new NC program. This is typically caused by excessive total program data stored in memory, attempting to register a program that exceeds remaining capacity, or corrupted memory allocation requiring initialization.

Safety

  • Program cannot be stored

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Press SYSTEM > PROGRAM key and check total memory usage. On older controls (0i/16i/18i), check the top of screen for 'USED: XXXX / TOTAL: XXXX' display. On newer controls (30i/31i/32i), press SYSTEM > CURRENT, then check memory usage percentage.

  2. 2

Delete unnecessary programs via MDI mode. Select unwanted programs using cursor, press DELETE key, then confirm deletion. Prioritize deleting large programs or test programs no longer needed.

Always backup programs to external device (CF card, USB, or network) before deletion to prevent permanent data loss.

  3. 3

If program memory parameter is user-adjustable (model-dependent), check Parameter 3107 (total program storage capacity) and Parameter 3108 (number of programs). These are typically read-only on newer controls but may be adjustable on 0i/16i series with memory expansion cards installed.

  4. 4

Consider transferring programs to external storage or enabling DNC (Direct Numerical Control) operation via Parameter 020 bit 0 (TAPE mode) to run programs directly from external device without loading into memory.

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Memory hardware failure suspected
  • ·Parameter corruption requiring factory reset
  • ·Repeated alarm after all software solutions attempted

Prevention

  • Regularly delete unused programs
  • Implement program naming conventions
  • Schedule periodic memory defragmentation
  • Monitor memory usage during program development
  • Maintain current battery backup

Common Mistakes

  • Deleting programs without backup
  • Ignoring memory usage until alarm occurs
  • Storing test programs permanently
  • Not optimizing program size during development
  • Attempting parameter changes without proper documentation
