Fanuc Alarm 072 - Program Directory Full

Too Many Programs

Fanuc program alarm 072: Too Many Programs. The part program contains an error or illegal condition that the Fanuc control cannot execute. Correct the program to clear this alarm.

Root Cause Summary

FANUC Alarm 072 occurs when the CNC memory has reached the maximum number of program registrations allowed by the system configuration. This limit is controlled by parameter settings that define the maximum number of programs (not memory capacity) that can be stored in the program directory. The alarm prevents new program registration until existing programs are deleted or the parameter limit is increased.

Safety

  • New program cannot be stored

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Press SYSTEM > PARAM and check Parameter 3107 (maximum number of programs). Note the current value (typical range: 40-400 depending on system configuration).

  2. 2

Press PROG key and view the program directory list. Count the total number of registered O-numbers or check the program count display at the bottom of the directory screen.

  3. 3

Delete unused or obsolete programs: Select program, press DELETE key, confirm deletion. Repeat until sufficient entries are freed.

Verify programs are backed up before deletion. Some programs may be protected by parameter 3202 bit settings.

  4. 4

If all programs are needed, increase Parameter 3107 value (requires parameter write enable via parameter 0000 bit 0 = 1). Verify available memory capacity using SYSTEM > CURRENT screen to ensure sufficient flash/SRAM.

Setting parameter write enable disables write protection. Return bit to 0 after modification. Power cycle required after parameter change.

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Parameter corruption suspected
  • ·Memory hardware failure indicated
  • ·System won't accept program deletion

Prevention

  • Implement regular program housekeeping schedule
  • Use external program storage for archive
  • Monitor program count monthly
  • Establish naming conventions for easy identification

Common Mistakes

  • Deleting active production programs
  • Not backing up before mass deletion
  • Ignoring macro program accumulation
  • Assuming all O-numbers are necessary
