Fanuc Alarm 078 - SEQUENCE NUMBER NOT FOUND

Sequence Number

Fanuc program alarm 078: Sequence Number. The part program contains an error or illegal condition that the Fanuc control cannot execute. Correct the program to clear this alarm.

Root Cause Summary

Fanuc Alarm 078 occurs when the CNC control cannot locate a specified sequence number (N-word) during a sequence number search operation, GOTO command execution, or block skip function. This typically results from program editing errors, incorrect sequence number format, or the target N-word being deleted or skipped by block skip conditions.

Safety

  • Fix program before running
  • Correct program errors before executing cycle
  • Be prepared to press the emergency stop button if the machine starts moving unexpectedly.
  • Ensure all safety interlocks are functioning correctly before running the program.
  • Verify the program in single block mode before running in automatic mode, especially after making changes.
  • If the machine starts moving in an unexpected manner, immediately press the emergency stop button.
  • Fix the program before running to prevent unexpected behavior or system errors

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Press PRGRM key, select the program in alarm (check alarm display for program name O-number). Review the line that triggered the alarm - look for GOTO statement, M198, M99 Pxxxx, or G65 Pxxxx command and note the target sequence number.

  2. 2

Use the search function in EDIT mode: Press ADDRESS key, input 'N' followed by the sequence number being searched (e.g., N100), then press down cursor. If 'N NOT FOUND' appears on screen, the sequence number does not exist in the program.

  3. 3

Verify sequence number format matches Fanuc requirements: N-word must be N followed by 1-5 digits (depending on parameter 3001 setting for sequence number digits). Check parameter 3001 in SYSTEM > PARAM > TYPE 3001 to confirm maximum digit count.

  4. 4

Correct the program by either adding the missing sequence number at the intended location or modifying the GOTO/P address to reference an existing sequence number. After editing, perform a memory clear reset (press RESET + cycle power if needed) and re-execute.

Always backup program before editing. If program is protected, check parameter 3202#0 (WTP) write protection setting.

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Parameter corruption requiring factory defaults
  • ·Memory hardware failure
  • ·Control software corruption

Prevention

  • Always verify sequence numbers exist before using GOTO commands
  • Use consistent sequence number increments
  • Validate programs with dry run before production
  • Maintain backup copies of proven programs

Common Mistakes

  • Attempting GOTO between main program and subprogram
  • Using sequence numbers that don't exist
  • Forgetting to add sequence numbers after program edits
  • Incorrect parameter 3404 settings for application needs
