Fanuc Alarm 080 - G37 MEASURING POSITION SIGNAL NOT PROPERLY INPUT

G37 MEASURING POSITION SIGNAL NOT PROPERLY INPUT

Fanuc PS080: The G37 tool length measurement cycle did not receive the skip signal at the measurement position. The tool measurement probe did not activate within the measurement stroke.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 080 occurs when the CNC detects the automatic tool changer (ATC) is not in its ready position before attempting a tool change operation. This is typically caused by mechanical misalignment, ATC origin position loss, limit switch failures, or PMC ladder logic not receiving proper ready signals from the tool changer mechanism.

Safety

  • Tool change blocked

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Navigate to SYSTEM > PMC > PMC SIGNAL TRACE and monitor ATC ready signal addresses (typically G54.0-G54.7 range). Check for ATC-READY, MAGAZINE-IN-POSITION, ARM-AT-ORIGIN signals while cycling through manual ATC operations.

  2. 2

Perform manual ATC origin return using the machine MPG panel or MDI mode. Execute M06 or manufacturer-specific origin return M-code (often M60 or custom macro) to index the tool changer to home position.

Ensure no tool is in the spindle or ATC gripper before performing origin return to prevent collisions.

  3. 3

Check ATC position detection switches using DIAGNOSIS screen > #700-#799 (machine builder specific diagnostic addresses). Verify dog cams or proximity sensors for arm rotation, magazine index, and vertical position are functioning and adjusted correctly.

  4. 4

Verify parameters related to ATC reference position: Check Parameter 6000-series (machine builder ATC parameters). Confirm reference position data has not been lost due to battery failure or encoder issues.

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·PMC ladder modification required
  • ·Mechanical component replacement needed
  • ·Encoder/sensor replacement required

Prevention

  • Regular ATC lubrication per maintenance schedule
  • Keep ATC area clean of chips and coolant
  • Monitor ATC cycle times for gradual degradation
  • Verify proper tool holder condition

Common Mistakes

  • Ignoring gradual ATC slowdown before failure
  • Using incorrect lubricants on ATC mechanisms
  • Bypassing safety interlocks instead of fixing root cause
  • Not checking spindle orientation before ATC troubleshooting
