Okuma OSP Alarm A 8503 - Spindle internal centering unit interlock

Spindle internal centering unit interlock

The control rejected a spindle internal centering unit M-command because the required machine state for that command was not met. Each centering unit motion (middle advance, advance, retract, clamp/unclamp, machining cycle) is only allowed under specific spindle rotation and clamp conditions, and the interlock trips when the sequence is violated.

Common Causes

  • Centering unit command issued while the spindle was in the wrong state (rotating when it must be stopped, or stopped when it must be rotating)
  • Clamp/unclamp or advance/retract confirmation signal not in the required state when the next command was issued
  • Program issuing centering unit M-commands (M706-M711, M750) out of the permitted sequence
  • Chuck closed when a centering unit command required it open (Code 8)

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. 1Read the code number shown with the alarm: code 1 = M706 middle advance issued while spindle not stopped or centering unit not unclamped; code 2 = M707 advance issued while spindle not rotating, unit in retract position, or unit not clamped; code 3 = M708 middle retract issued while the advance confirmation signal was OFF; code 4 = M709 retract issued while spindle not stopped or unit not unclamped; code 5 = M710 unclamp issued during spindle rotation; code 6 = M711 clamp issued during spindle rotation; code 7 = M750 machining cycle issued while spindle not rotating, unit in retract, or unit not clamped; code 8 = Chuck is closed when the command requires it open
  2. 2Read the code shown with the alarm and identify which command was blocked: 1=M706 middle advance, 2=M707 advance, 3=M708 middle retract, 4=M709 retract, 5=M710 unclamp, 6=M711 clamp, 7=M750 machining cycle, 8=chuck closed.
  3. 3Code 1 or 4: verify the spindle is fully stopped (not decelerating) and the centering unit is in unclamp before issuing M706/M709.
  4. 4Code 2 or 7: verify the spindle is rotating, the centering unit is out of the retract position, and the unit is clamped before issuing M707/M750.
  5. 5Code 3: check the centering unit advance confirmation signal and its limit switch/proximity sensor; M708 is rejected while that confirmation is OFF.
  6. 6Code 5 or 6: confirm the spindle is at zero speed before issuing M710 unclamp or M711 clamp; clamp/unclamp during rotation is always blocked.
  7. 7Code 8: open the chuck before issuing the centering unit command; if the chuck is already open, check the chuck open confirmation input.
