Okuma OSP Alarm C 3184 - MCS Over speed

MCS Over speed

The drive detected that the actual motor speed of the axis named in the object (or spindle if none) exceeded the allowable limit. The code on screen shows the speed detected at the moment of the alarm, expressed relative to one motor revolution and the speed control frequency.

Common Causes

  • Faulty motor encoder on a BL motor giving false speed feedback
  • Damaged encoder link cable or connector on a VAC motor
  • Faulty resolver or magnetic encoder, or its cable/connector, on a VAC motor
  • Faulty inverter unit control board

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. 1Read the code shown with the alarm; it is the motor speed detected when the alarm tripped, which tells you how far above normal the feedback went.
  2. 2Identify the motor type on the indicated axis: for a BL motor, suspect the built-in motor encoder first; for a VAC motor, check the resolver or magnetic encoder.
  3. 3Power down and inspect the encoder link (or resolver/magnetic encoder) cables and connectors for that axis: reseat connectors and check for chafed or cut cable runs.
  4. 4If feedback hardware checks out, the inverter unit control board may be misreading speed; lock out power and allow capacitor discharge before inspecting drive components.
  5. 5If the alarm recurs after these checks, record the alarm number, code and object and contact Okuma service.
