Okuma OSP Alarm C 3165 - MCS Encoder initialization failure

MCS Encoder initialization failure

The control could not complete the startup handshake with the motor encoder over the encoder link. The axis (or spindle) named in the object field never got its encoder initialized, so position feedback for that axis is unavailable.

Common Causes

  • Failed motor encoder
  • Damaged or loose encoder link cable/connector
  • Faulty inverter unit control board
  • Encoder parameter mismatch (multi-rotation range or communication basic info)

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. 1Read the code number shown with the alarm: code XX=0 = Error detected during reset step of encoder link; code XX=1 = Error during network address setting; code XX=2 = Error requesting basic communication information; code XX=3 = Error during communication version change; code XX=4 = Error acquiring device information; code XX=5 = Error during parameter change; code XX=6 = Error at AT (auto) mode start; code YY=0 = Communication error; ZZZZ shows link error status C2ERR
  2. 2Read the code on screen: XX shows which link sequence step failed (0=reset through 6=AT mode start) and YY shows the error type — note both before resetting.
  3. 3If YY=0 (communication error) or YY=1/2/3 (transmission/reception time over), power down and inspect the encoder link cable and connectors on the named axis for bent pins, oil contamination, or a loose latch; reseat both ends.
  4. 4If YY=4 or 5 (abnormal response address/code), the encoder is answering incorrectly — swap or test the encoder link cable first, then suspect the motor encoder itself.
  5. 5If YY=6 (parameter error), check ZZZZ: 1=missing parameters, 2=incompatible communication basic info, 3=multi-rotation detection range mismatch — have Okuma service verify the encoder-related parameters for that axis.
  6. 6If cable and connectors check out, replace the motor encoder; only after that suspect the inverter unit control board.
  7. 7If the alarm returns after these checks, record the alarm number, full XXYYZZZZ code and object, and contact Okuma service.
