Okuma OSP Alarm C 3167 - MCS Encoder with shaft initialization failure

MCS Encoder with shaft initialization failure

The control failed to initialize the shaft-type encoder on the axis or spindle named in the object. Without valid feedback from this encoder the axis or spindle cannot run, pointing to a fault in the encoder, its link cabling, or the inverter control board.

Common Causes

  • Encoder with shaft defective
  • Encoder link cable damaged or connector loose/contaminated
  • Inverter unit control board defective

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. 1Note the axis or spindle named in the object and record the displayed code — it uses the same breakdown as 'MCS Encoder initialize failed' and shows which initialization stage failed.
  2. 2Inspect the encoder link cable and connectors on the named axis/spindle: reseat both ends and check for crushed cable, oil ingress, or bent pins.
  3. 3Swap the encoder link cable with a known-good one and retry power-up to see if the alarm clears or follows the cable.
  4. 4If cabling is good, replace the shaft encoder on the named axis/spindle and retry initialization.
  5. 5If the alarm persists with a known-good encoder and cable, replace the inverter unit control board.
  6. 6If it still returns after these checks, record the alarm number, code, and object and contact Okuma service.
