Okuma OSP Alarm C 3173 - MCS Motor overheat

MCS Motor overheat

The MCS drive detected that the motor temperature for the indicated axis (or spindle if no axis is named) is abnormally high. On BL motors the overheat is sensed through the motor encoder, so the source can be the motor itself, the encoder, or both.

Common Causes

  • VAC motor cooling fan failed or heat sink clogged with dirt and chips
  • Frequent CW/CCW reversals and stops at high frequency overheating the motor
  • Faulty BL motor with internal overheat
  • Faulty motor encoder falsely reporting or detecting overheat (BL motors detect overheat via the encoder)

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. 1Read the code number shown with the alarm: code 0010 = Motor overheat detected; code 0011 = Overheat detected at the motor; code 0012 = Overheat detected at the position encoder; code 0013 = Overheat detected at both the motor and the encoder
  2. 2Note the object (axis name, or none for spindle) and read the code: 0010 = motor overheat, 0011 = overheat detected at the motor, 0012 = at the position encoder, 0013 = at both motor and encoder.
  3. 3Let the motor cool, then check the VAC motor cooling fan runs and clean the heat sink of chips, dust and oil sludge blocking airflow.
  4. 4Review the recent duty: repeated high-frequency CW/CCW reversals and stops will overheat the motor; allow cool-down time or reduce the cycle aggressiveness.
  5. 5For codes 0012 or 0013, suspect the motor encoder, since BL motors sense overheat through the encoder; inspect the encoder cable and connector before replacing the encoder.
  6. 6Isolate power and allow capacitors to discharge before touching drive hardware, then check motor and encoder connections; if cooling and connections are good, replace the BL motor or encoder as indicated by the code.
  7. 7If the alarm returns after these checks, record the alarm number, code and object and contact Okuma service.
