3164

Okuma OSP Alarm C 3164 - MCS Encoder detected error.

MCS Encoder detected error.

The motor encoder on the axis named in the object (or the spindle if no axis is shown) can no longer supply position data to the MCS drive. The control has lost feedback from that axis, so motion on it cannot continue safely.

Common Causes

  • Failed motor encoder (internal encoder fault reported via the XX error code)
  • Encoder cable or connector damaged, loose or contaminated between motor and MCS drive
  • Multi-turn position data exceeding the encoder's rotating range (shown in the ZZZZ field)

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. 1Read the code number shown with the alarm: code XX = Encoder error code, meaning depends on the encoder type; code YY = Detailed encoder status, varies with encoder type; code ZZZZ = Multi-turn position data, shown when the multi-turn count has exceeded its rotating range
  2. 2Note the object to identify the affected axis (or spindle) and record the full XXYYZZZZ code shown on screen.
  3. 3Read the code: XX is the encoder-type-specific error and YY its detailed status; if ZZZZ shows multi-turn data, the multi-turn position has exceeded its rotating range.
  4. 4Lock out machine power and allow the drive to discharge, then inspect the encoder cable and connectors at the motor and MCS drive for looseness, pin damage, oil ingress or chafing; reseat or repair as needed.
  5. 5If the cable and connections are good, the motor encoder itself is faulty; replace the encoder/motor encoder assembly per Okuma service procedure.
  6. 6If the alarm returns after these checks, record the alarm number, full code and object and contact Okuma service.
