Okuma OSP Alarm C 3163 - MCS Encoder link error

MCS Encoder link error

The MCS drive lost reliable communication with a feedback device on the named axis or spindle, so positioning speed can no longer be detected. The YY byte identifies which device (motor encoder, encoder with shaft, independent encoder, or ABSO SCALE) and the ZZZZ bits give the communication error type.

Common Causes

  • Failed motor encoder, ABSO SCALE, encoder with shaft, or stand-alone encoder on the reported axis
  • Damaged encoder link cable or loose/contaminated connector
  • Faulty inverter unit control board
  • Noise on the feedback link from poor shielding or grounding

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. 1Read the code number shown with the alarm: code YY=00 = Error detected at the motor encoder; code YY=01 = Error detected at the position encoder with shaft; code YY=02 = Error detected at the independent position encoder; code YY=03 = Error detected at the ABSO SCALE; code ZZZZ bit15 = Communication error with a stand-alone encoder; code ZZZZ bit14 = Communication error with ABSO SCALE 2; code ZZZZ bit13 = Communication error with ABSO SCALE or encoder with shaft; code ZZZZ bit12 = Communication error with motor encoder
  2. 2Read the code: YY=00 motor encoder, 01 encoder with shaft, 02 independent position encoder, 03 ABSO SCALE; use the ZZZZ bits (bit0 time-out, bit1 parity, bit5 CRC, bits 12-15 communication error per device) to see whether the link is dead or corrupted.
  3. 3Lock out power and allow the drive to discharge; then reseat the encoder link connectors at the feedback device identified by YY and at the inverter unit.
  4. 4Inspect the encoder link cable for damage, coolant ingress and proper shield grounding; swap with a known-good cable if one is available.
  5. 5If the cable and connectors are good, test or substitute the feedback device indicated by YY (motor encoder, scale, or stand-alone encoder).
  6. 6If the fault remains after cable and encoder replacement, the inverter unit control board is the remaining suspect; record the full code and object and contact Okuma service.
