Okuma OSP Alarm B 2192 - MCS Motor overload

MCS Motor overload

The control detected that the load on the axis or spindle motor exceeded the limit of its overload protection curve, so it tripped the protection function. The object field names the axis, or is blank when the spindle motor is the one that overloaded.

Common Causes

  • Cutting load too heavy for the motor (depth of cut, feed, or dull tool)
  • Mechanical binding or excessive friction on the named axis (ball screw, guideway, gib)
  • Motor itself failing (winding or bearing degradation)
  • Corrupted or mismatched servo data file

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. 1Read the code number shown with the alarm: code YYYY = Identifies which overload protection curve was used to detect the overload; code ZZZZ = The internally calculated overload data at the time of the trip
  2. 2Note the axis name in [Object] and the code on screen: the first four digits identify which protection curve tripped, the last four are the internally calculated overload value - record both before resetting.
  3. 3Check the recent cutting conditions on that axis/spindle: reduce depth of cut or feed and retry; if the alarm only appears under heavy cuts, the program is simply overloading the motor.
  4. 4With power off, move the named axis by hand (or inspect the spindle) for binding, tight spots, or unusual resistance indicating a mechanical problem.
  5. 5Inspect the motor for abnormal heat, noise, or smell; a motor that trips at light load is suspect.
  6. 6If the motor and mechanics check out, have the servo data file verified/reloaded, then contact Okuma service with the recorded code if the alarm returns.
