Okuma Alarm 2556 - Cutting Tool Groove Process Error (G141/G142 Sequence)

CUTTING TOOL GROOVE PROCESS

This alarm indicates an incorrect G-code sequence related to the grooving function. The exact cause depends on the auxiliary code (sub-code) shown with the alarm: if the sub-code is 1, G141 was commanded without first selecting grooving mode; if the sub-code is 2, G142 was commanded while the control was already in grooving mode (ON). This is a part-program logic error, not a hardware fault.

Safety

  • Program errors can cause unexpected tool motion — always perform a dry run after program modifications
  • Verify tool clearances and fixture positions before running the corrected program in automatic mode

Common Causes

  • G141 was programmed in a part program before the grooving mode was selected
  • G142 was programmed when the control was already in the grooving ON state
  • The program logic does not correctly pair the grooving ON/OFF commands with the grooving mode selection
  • A program restart or mid-block restart occurred at a point where grooving state was inconsistent

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. 1Check the sub-code shown with alarm 2556: sub-code 1 means G141 was used without grooving mode selected; sub-code 2 means G142 was used while already in grooving mode
  2. 2Review the part program and locate the block containing G141 or G142
  3. 3Ensure that grooving mode is properly selected before commanding G141 (groove OFF) or G142 (groove ON)
  4. 4Verify that G141 and G142 commands are not duplicated or out of sequence with respect to the grooving mode state
  5. 5Correct the program sequence and perform a program verify or dry run before machining production parts
