Okuma OSP Alarm B 2684 - MCS Rotary encoder 5 error

MCS Rotary encoder 5 error

The MCS drive system detected illegal or invalid data coming from rotary encoder 5 (an auxiliary/other encoder) on the axis named in the alarm object. The axis cannot be trusted for positioning until the encoder signal is restored.

Common Causes

  • Failed rotary encoder 5 unit
  • Damaged encoder cable or loose connector between encoder and drive
  • Electrical noise or contamination on the encoder read head
  • Incorrect encoder mounting after mechanical work

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. 1Note the axis named in the alarm object and locate rotary encoder 5 on that axis; inspect the encoder cable and connector for damage, pinching or oil contamination and reseat the connector.
  2. 2Check the encoder mounting and coupling for looseness or recent mechanical disturbance that could corrupt its output data.
  3. 3Swap or substitute the encoder cable with a known-good cable if available to rule out a wiring fault before condemning the encoder.
  4. 4If the alarm remains after cable checks, replace rotary encoder 5 with the correct unit as the manual's corrective action directs, then cycle power and verify the axis positions correctly.
