Okuma OSP Alarm B 2698 - MCS Linear scale 1 initialization failure

MCS Linear scale 1 initialization failure

The control could not complete initialization of linear scale 1 (Mitutoyo) on the named axis. Without successful scale initialization the axis position feedback from that scale is unavailable, so the axis cannot be relied on.

Common Causes

  • Faulty rotary encoder 1
  • Faulty motor encoder
  • Defective encoder link cable or connector (loose, damaged, or contaminated contacts)
  • Faulty control base of the inverter unit

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. 1Read the code number shown with the alarm: code XXYYZZZZ = Failure detail code, interpreted the same way as alarm 0865 'MCS Encoder initialize failed'
  2. 2Note the axis named in the alarm object and record the XXYYZZZZ code; decode it using alarm 0865 'MCS Encoder initialize failed' for the detailed failure point.
  3. 3Lock out power and allow the drive to discharge before touching hardware; then inspect the encoder link cable and connectors between the scale/encoder and the inverter unit for looseness, bent pins, or damage, and reseat them.
  4. 4If the cable and connectors are sound, swap or test rotary encoder 1 on the named axis to isolate a failed encoder.
  5. 5Next check the motor encoder, since it is on the same feedback path.
  6. 6Only after encoders and cabling are eliminated, suspect the control base of the inverter unit; replace and verify per the manual's exchange-and-check procedure.
  7. 7If initialization still fails after these exchanges, record the alarm number, axis, and full code and contact Okuma service.
