Okuma OSP Alarm A 1698 - MCS Linear scale 1 initialization failure

MCS Linear scale 1 initialization failure

The MCS drive could not complete initialization of linear scale 1 (a Mitutoyo scale) on the axis named in the alarm object. Position feedback from that scale is unavailable, so the axis cannot run.

Common Causes

  • Faulty rotary encoder 1 or motor encoder
  • Damaged or loose encoder link cable/connector
  • Defective control base of the inverter unit
  • Scale head contamination or scale read failure at power-up

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. 1Read the code number shown with the alarm: code XXYYZZZZ = Same breakdown as alarm 0865 'MCS Encoder initialize failed'; identifies the failing initialization stage
  2. 2Note the axis shown in the [Object] field and the XXYYZZZZ code; decode it using alarm 0865 'MCS Encoder initialize failed' to identify which initialization step failed.
  3. 3Power down and lock out the machine, then inspect the encoder link cable and connectors between the scale/encoder and the inverter unit for looseness, bent pins, or coolant ingress; reseat them.
  4. 4Check the linear scale read head and scale tape for coolant, chips, or damage, and clean per the scale maker's procedure.
  5. 5Swap or substitute rotary encoder 1 / the motor encoder with a known-good unit to isolate a failed encoder.
  6. 6If the cable and encoders check out, the control base of the inverter unit is suspect; allow DC bus capacitors to discharge before handling, and exchange the unit.
  7. 7If the alarm persists after these exchanges, record the alarm number, object axis and full code and contact Okuma service.
