Okuma OSP Alarm A 1228 - Illegal spindle mode

Illegal spindle mode

On an LT-specification machine, a W-axis move command was designated while the same spindle was not selected for both turrets. The W-axis (spindle saddle) may only move when both turrets agree on the spindle selection, so the command was blocked.

Common Causes

  • Program issues a W-axis move while the two turrets have different spindles selected
  • Program issues W-axis synchronized feed without a common spindle selection
  • Mode/selection sequence error in a twin-turret LT program

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. 1Read the code number shown with the alarm: code 1 = A W-axis move command was designated.; code 2 = The W-axis synchronized feed command was designated.
  2. 2Read the code: 1 means a W-axis move command was designated; 2 means the W-axis synchronized feed command was designated, in each case without the same spindle selected for both turrets.
  3. 3Find the W-axis command in the program and check which spindle each turret side has selected at that point.
  4. 4Edit the program so both turrets select the same spindle before the W-axis move or synchronized feed command, following the LT-model spindle selection rules.
  5. 5Re-run the corrected section in single block to confirm the W-axis moves without the mode alarm.
