Okuma OSP Alarm A 1197 - MCS Full abso scale error

MCS Full abso scale error

The full absolute scale on the indicated axis (or spindle) can no longer read position data, so the control has lost true position feedback for that axis. The code breaks down into an encoder error code, detailed encoder status, and multi-turn position data that flags when the multi-turn count has run past its rotating range.

Common Causes

  • Faulty full absolute scale / encoder on the indicated axis
  • Scale or encoder multi-turn data exceeded its rotating range (ZZZZ field shows the multi-turn data)
  • Damaged scale cable or loose connector between the scale and the MCS

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. 1Read the code number shown with the alarm: code XX = Encoder error code, meaning depends on the encoder type fitted; code YY = Detailed encoder status, varies with encoder type; code ZZZZ = Multi-turn position data; appears when the multi-turn count has exceeded its rotating range
  2. 2Note the axis name and the full XXYYZZZZ code from the screen; the ZZZZ multi-turn data tells service whether the count overran its range.
  3. 3Lock out power before touching feedback wiring, then inspect the scale/encoder cable and connectors on the indicated axis for looseness, coolant ingress, or chafing.
  4. 4Check the scale read head and scale tape/extrusion for contamination, coolant, or physical damage along the axis travel.
  5. 5If the cable and scale are clean and connected and the error returns, the full absolute scale itself is the probable faulty part; record the code and contact Okuma service for replacement.
