A communication error occurred on the encoder link for the named axis or spindle, so the encoder can no longer report positioning speed to the drive. The control identifies which feedback device (motor encoder, shaft encoder, independent encoder, or ABSO SCALE) lost the link via the alarm code.

Okuma OSP Alarm A 1163 - MCS Encoder link error
MCS Encoder link error
A communication error occurred on the encoder link for the named axis or spindle, so the encoder can no longer report positioning speed to the drive. The control identifies which feedback device (motor encoder, shaft encoder, independent encoder, or ABSO SCALE) lost the link via the alarm code.
Common Causes
Failed motor encoder, ABSO SCALE, encoder with shaft, or stand-alone encoder on the reported axis
Encoder link cable damage or loose/contaminated connectors
Failed inverter unit control board
Noise on the link causing CRC, parity, or time-out errors
Troubleshooting Steps
1Read the code number shown with the alarm: code YY=00 = Error detected at the motor encoder; code YY=01 = Error detected at the position encoder with shaft; code YY=02 = Error detected at the independent position encoder; code YY=03 = Error detected at the ABSO SCALE; code ZZZZ bit15 = Communication error with a stand-alone encoder; code ZZZZ bit14 = Communication error with ABSO SCALE 2; code ZZZZ bit13 = Communication error with ABSO SCALE or encoder with shaft; code ZZZZ bit12 = Communication error with the motor encoder
2Read the YY portion of the code to identify the faulty device: 00 = motor encoder, 01 = position encoder with shaft, 02 = independent position encoder, 03 = ABSO SCALE.
3Check the ZZZZ status bits: bit0 time-out or bit1 parity usually means wiring/connectors; bit5 CRC or bit6 modulation code errors suggest noise or a failing encoder; bits 12-15 confirm which device stopped communicating.
4Lock out the machine and let the drive discharge, then inspect and reseat the encoder link connectors at the identified device and at the inverter; look for coolant in the connector, bent pins, and cable chafing along the axis travel.
5If wiring is sound, replace the feedback device indicated by YY (motor encoder, shaft encoder, independent encoder, or ABSO SCALE).
6If the alarm returns with a known-good encoder and cable, suspect the inverter unit control board and contact Okuma service with the alarm number, object, and full code.
