Okuma OSP Alarm A 1173 - MCS Motor overheat

MCS Motor overheat

The MCS drive detected that the axis or spindle motor temperature is abnormally high, reported either by the motor itself or by the position encoder (BL motors sense overheat through the encoder). Continued operation risks motor winding damage, so the cause of the heat buildup must be removed before restarting.

Common Causes

  • VAC motor cooling fan failed or heat sink clogged with chips/dirt
  • High-frequency CW/CCW reversing and stopping overloading the motor
  • BL motor internal overheat (motor itself)
  • Motor encoder faulty (BL motor overheat is detected via the encoder)

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. 1Read the code number shown with the alarm: code 0010 = Motor overheat detected; code 0011 = Overheat detected at the motor itself; code 0012 = Overheat detected at the position encoder; code 0013 = Overheat detected at both the motor and the encoder
  2. 2Note the object (axis name, or none = spindle) and the code: 0010 = motor overheat, 0011 = detected at the motor, 0012 = detected at the position encoder, 0013 = detected at both. Let the motor cool before working on it.
  3. 3Check the VAC motor cooling fan: verify it runs and blows air; replace the fan if it is stalled or weak.
  4. 4Clean the motor heat sink and cooling passages of chips, oil and dust so heat can dissipate.
  5. 5Review the recent machining duty: frequent CW/CCW reversing and high-frequency starts/stops overheat the motor; reduce the reversing frequency or duty cycle.
  6. 6Lock out and discharge the drive before touching motor or encoder wiring, then inspect the motor encoder and its cable/connector (codes 0012/0013); replace the encoder or BL motor if the overheat detection persists with a cool motor.
  7. 7If the alarm returns after cooling with no load, record the alarm number, code and object and contact Okuma service.
