KUKA Robot KRC0009 - MFC Overtemperature

MFC Overtemperature

The main field controller (MFC) internal temperature has exceeded the allowable threshold defined in the system configuration. This alarm triggers when thermal sensors detect excessive heat in the MFC electronics, typically above 70-75°C. The robot will stop all motion and require a cooldown period before operation can resume safely.

Common Causes

  • Blocked or obstructed cooling fan inlet or outlet on the KRC cabinet preventing proper airflow through the MFC module
  • Failed or damaged cooling fan in the control cabinet no longer providing adequate air circulation over critical components
  • Excessive ambient temperature in the robot cell exceeding 45°C or inadequate facility HVAC for the installation environment
  • Accumulated dust, debris, or contaminants blocking heat sink fins and cooling passages inside the cabinet reducing thermal transfer efficiency
  • Defective temperature sensor on the MFC board providing false high readings or actual component failure causing localized heating

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. 1Step 1: Immediately open the cabinet door and inspect the MFC cooling fan for operation. Listen and visually verify the fan is spinning at full speed during power-on.
  2. 2Step 2: Check the cabinet air filters and clean or replace if clogged. Verify all ventilation slots on top and bottom of cabinet are unobstructed and at least 200mm clearance exists.
  3. 3Step 3: Use a digital thermometer to measure ambient temperature inside the cabinet and in the facility. Verify cabinet internal temp is below 55°C and ambient below 45°C per KUKA specifications.
  4. 4Step 4: Power down the controller, wait 30 minutes for complete cooldown, then inspect the MFC heat sink for dust accumulation. Use compressed air to clean heat sink fins and board-level components.
  5. 5Step 5: Check fan connector X41 on the MFC board for secure connection and measure fan voltage (24VDC nominal). Replace fan if voltage is present but fan does not operate.
  6. 6Step 6: If alarm persists after cleaning and fan replacement, replace the MFC board as the thermal sensor or onboard component may have failed. Document all measurements and contact KUKA support for RMA procedure.
