231-A210

HEIDENHAIN 231-A210 - A210 Faulty control of brake: Step

A210 Faulty control of brake: Step

This TNC 640 error relates to the motor brake system. The control has detected an issue with brake operation or testing.

Root Cause Summary

The brake control state machine within the TNC has detected that the brake did not respond as expected during one of its control sequence steps. This typically results from either misconfigured timing parameters that don't match the physical brake response characteristics, or a hardware fault in the brake control circuit preventing proper operation. The step number in the alarm provides specific diagnostic information about which phase of the brake control sequence failed.

Safety

  • Refer to Heidenhain service manual
  • Ensure qualified technician performs repairs

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Access brake machine parameters

Press MOD, enter access code, select 'Machine Parameters'. Navigate to MP1010 series for the affected axis. Check MP1010.0 (brake active), MP1010.1 (brake delay time), MP1010.2 (brake release delay), and MP1010.3 (brake monitoring time).

Typical brake engagement delays range from 50-150ms for electromagnetic brakes. If monitoring time is shorter than actual brake response, this alarm will trigger.

  2. 2

    Measure actual brake response time

Use MOD 4 8 (Scope function) to capture the brake output signal and monitor servo following error simultaneously. Command a controlled axis movement and observe the time between brake release command and actual axis motion capability.

Add 20-30% margin to measured brake response time when setting MP1010 parameters to account for temperature variations and brake aging.

  3. 3

    Adjust brake timing parameters

Increase MP1010.1 (engagement delay) or MP1010.2 (release delay) based on measured values. Ensure MP1010.3 (monitoring window) is set appropriately for the control step that failed. Save parameters and cycle power to ensure changes take effect.

Insufficient brake engagement delay before servo disable can cause axis drift. Insufficient release delay can cause servo faults during motion start.

  4. 4

    Test brake control sequence

Manually enable/disable the axis drive using the manual control panel while monitoring the brake output in the PLC status display or using Scope. Verify alarm no longer occurs and axis holds position reliably when drive is disabled.

DIY Feasiblemedium confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Motor brake replacement required
  • ·TNC internal hardware failure confirmed
  • ·Safety circuit modifications needed

Prevention

  • Regular brake function testing per maintenance schedule
  • Monitor brake coil current trends
  • Keep motor connection boxes clean and dry
  • Update TNC software per Heidenhain recommendations

Common Mistakes

  • Ignoring brake test failures
  • Using incorrect brake voltage
  • Bypassing safety brake circuits
  • Not securing axis during brake testing
