HEIDENHAIN 231-A091 - A091 Drive lock through safety software

A091 Drive lock through safety software

This TNC 640 error relates to the machine safety system. The control has detected a condition that prevents safe operation of the drives.

Root Cause Summary

This alarm is triggered when the Heidenhain FSC safety software actively locks a drive to prevent motion due to a safety condition violation. The root cause is always safety-system related, either from physical safety device states, FSC input conditions, or safety parameter configuration issues. The drive itself is functional; the lockout is a protective measure by the control's certified safety functions.

Safety

  • Refer to Heidenhain service manual
  • Ensure qualified technician performs repairs

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

    Physically inspect all safety devices

Check all safety doors, guard panels, and interlock switches are fully closed and mechanically engaged. Look for damaged door striker plates or misaligned switches.

Never bypass safety devices. Doing so violates safety regulations and may cause serious injury.

  2. 2

Check FSC input status in MOD menu

Press MOD key, navigate to 'System' > 'Safety' > 'FSC Inputs'. Verify all safety inputs show expected logic states (typically high/24V for closed/safe condition). Note which input is in fault state.

Input names in FSC menu correspond to PLC markers. Cross-reference with your machine's safety circuit diagram.

  3. 3

    Reset safety circuit if necessary

Close all safety devices, then press the safety acknowledge/reset button on the machine (if equipped). Some machines require cycling mode selector to reset safety chain.

On machines with FSC, simple E-STOP reset is not enough—the safety circuit must acknowledge all devices are in safe state.

  4. 4

Clear alarm and test axis enable

Press CE key to clear alarm. Attempt axis motion in Manual mode. If alarm returns immediately, PLC logic or FSC configuration is preventing enable based on current safety state.

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Safety relay replacement required
  • ·TNC software corruption detected
  • ·Multiple safety circuits failing simultaneously

Prevention

  • Regular testing of all E-stop circuits
  • Periodic safety relay replacement per manufacturer schedule
  • Maintain proper startup sequence timing

Common Mistakes

  • Bypassing safety circuits temporarily
  • Ignoring intermittent E-stop contact issues
  • Not allowing adequate safety system initialization time
