Fanuc 589 - Spindle atc error

SPINDLE ATC ERROR

Fanuc spindle alarm 589: SPINDLE ATC ERROR. The spindle drive or spindle motor has detected a fault condition that requires diagnosis before spindle operation can resume.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 589 SPINDLE ATC ERROR indicates the spindle orientation or clamping/unclamping sequence failed during automatic tool change operations. This typically occurs when the spindle cannot achieve proper orientation position, the drawbar mechanism fails to release or clamp the tool, or sensor feedback signals are not received within the allowed time window.

Safety

  • Verify corrected program or parameters before resuming machining

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Manually jog spindle to orient position using MDI command (M19 or M119 depending on system). Observe if orientation completes successfully and if alarm clears.

  2. 2

Check spindle orientation sensor (proximity switch or encoder marker) for proper gap (typically 0.5-2mm), damage, or contamination. Clean sensor face and target surface with non-residue cleaner.

Ensure spindle power is OFF before cleaning sensors near rotating components.

  3. 3

Verify orientation sensor signal at spindle drive or I/O using ladder diagram or PMC diagnostics. Confirm signal changes state when spindle rotates through orient position.

  4. 4

Check spindle orientation parameters (1410-1419 series) for correct orientation angle, speed, and timeout values. Compare with machine manufacturer specifications and adjust if necessary.
