Fanuc 596 - Spindle probe error

SPINDLE PROBE ERROR

Fanuc spindle alarm 596: SPINDLE PROBE ERROR. The spindle drive or spindle motor has detected a fault condition that requires diagnosis before spindle operation can resume.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 596 SPINDLE PROBE ERROR indicates a failure in the spindle orientation sensor or probe feedback system. This alarm occurs when the spindle drive cannot detect proper positioning signals from the spindle encoder, proximity sensor, or magnetic probe used for tool change orientation and rigid tapping operations.

Safety

  • Verify corrected program or parameters before resuming machining

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Access the spindle orientation sensor (usually located on spindle motor or head). Inspect for physical damage, mounting looseness, or contamination with chips and coolant.

Lock out machine power before accessing spindle components

  2. 2

Verify the orientation dog or target on the spindle shaft is present, secure, and positioned correctly within sensing range (typically 1-3mm gap).

  3. 3

Using a multimeter, check sensor output voltage while manually rotating spindle. Sensor should switch between 0V and 24V DC (or PNP/NPN equivalent) when dog passes.

  4. 4

Clean sensor face and target area thoroughly. Adjust sensor mounting position if gap is incorrect. Replace sensor if no voltage change detected.
