Fanuc 562 - Spindle balance error

SPINDLE BALANCE ERROR

Fanuc spindle alarm 562: SPINDLE BALANCE ERROR. The spindle drive or spindle motor has detected a fault condition that requires diagnosis before spindle operation can resume.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 562 indicates an imbalance in the three-phase motor currents supplying the spindle motor, detected by the spindle amplifier (SPM or α series). This typically results from motor winding issues, phase loss in power supply, encoder feedback problems, or amplifier module failures. The drive detects asymmetrical current draw that exceeds acceptable threshold parameters.

Safety

  • Verify corrected program or parameters before resuming machining

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Check all power cable connections between spindle amplifier (SPM/αi) and spindle motor for tightness, damage, or corrosion. Verify proper torque on all terminals.

LOCKOUT/TAGOUT required. Verify zero voltage with meter before touching connections.

  2. 2

Megger test the spindle motor windings phase-to-phase and phase-to-ground with motor disconnected. Should read >10MΩ to ground and balanced resistance between phases (typically 0.5-5Ω depending on motor size).

Disconnect motor from amplifier before megger testing to avoid damaging the drive.

  3. 3

Inspect motor power cables for damaged insulation, bent pins, or moisture intrusion in connectors. Check cable routing for pinch points or wear from moving machine components.

  4. 4

If motor winding resistance is unbalanced or insulation resistance is low, replace spindle motor. If motor tests good, replace power cable between amplifier and motor.
