Fanuc Alarm 443 - Encoder Speed Exceeded

Encoder Overspeed

Fanuc alarm 443: Encoder Overspeed. The encoder (pulse coder) on the specified axis has detected a fault condition. Position feedback cannot be reliably obtained until the encoder issue is resolved.

Root Cause Summary

Fanuc Alarm 443 EXCESS CURRENT indicates the servo amplifier has detected abnormally high current draw on the specified axis, exceeding the software-monitored threshold. This typically results from mechanical binding, collisions, faulty motor/amplifier components, incorrect servo parameters, or degraded motor insulation causing internal shorts.

Safety

  • Reduce speed commands

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Immediately inspect the axis mechanically: check for collision damage, chips/debris in ballscrew/ways, bent components, or abnormal resistance when manually rotating the motor (power OFF, release brakes). Verify coupling condition and tightness.

Lock out machine power and follow LOTO procedures before manual inspection

  2. 2

Check DIAGNOSIS screen > Servo monitor (path varies: SYSTEM > DIAGNOSIS > SERVO or PMC > DIAGNOSIS). Monitor parameters 300-303 (current feedback) and 200-203 (positional deviation) during slow jog. Excessive current spikes or high deviation indicate mechanical resistance.

  3. 3

Verify counterbalance operation if applicable (Z-axis). Check hydraulic/pneumatic pressure gauges and balance valve function. Imbalanced Z-axis creates constant high current load.

  4. 4

Lubricate ballscrews andways per OEM specifications. Check gib adjustment - over-tightened gibs cause excessive friction and current draw. Re-check axis movement and alarm condition after mechanical corrections.

DIY Feasiblemedium confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Encoder replacement required
  • ·Servo amplifier failure confirmed
  • ·Mechanical coupling repair needed

Prevention

  • Regular coupling inspection and maintenance
  • Proper parameter backup and verification
  • Encoder cable routing away from power lines
  • Periodic servo tuning verification

Common Mistakes

  • Setting maximum velocity too high without considering mechanical limits
  • Ignoring early signs of coupling wear
  • Not checking encoder cable routing during installation
  • Adjusting servo parameters without understanding machine dynamics
