Fanuc Alarm 442 - Encoder Data Invalid

Encoder Data Error

Fanuc alarm 442: Encoder Data Error. The encoder (pulse coder) on the specified axis has detected a fault condition. Position feedback cannot be reliably obtained until the encoder issue is resolved.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 442 CURRENT OFFSET indicates the servo amplifier has detected an abnormal current offset value during power-on self-diagnostics or during operation. This typically results from analog current feedback circuit drift, amplifier hardware failure, motor cable issues, or environmental factors affecting the current detection circuits in the digital servo amplifier.

Safety

  • Position data unreliable

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Check amplifier LED status on the faulted axis. A solid red LED or specific blink pattern indicates amplifier hardware fault. Record the LED code pattern for reference.

  2. 2

Navigate to DIAGNOSIS > SERVO and check diagnostics #300-#303 (current feedback values) for the affected axis. Compare values to other axes; abnormal offset values (typically >±500) indicate amplifier circuit issues.

  3. 3

Power down and verify proper ventilation around the servo amplifier. Check for dust accumulation on heatsinks and cooling fans. Clean if necessary and verify ambient temperature is within specification (0-55°C).

Wait 5 minutes after power-down for DC bus capacitors to discharge before touching amplifier components.

  4. 4

If diagnostics confirm abnormal offset and cooling is adequate, replace the servo amplifier for the affected axis. After replacement, perform current offset auto-calibration via parameter 8162#0 (COFS) or through SYSTEM > SERVO > OFFSET menu.

Ensure motor cables are disconnected when swapping amplifiers to prevent back-EMF damage.

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Encoder replacement required
  • ·Servo amplifier module failure
  • ·Multiple axes affected simultaneously
  • ·Alarm persists after cable replacement

Prevention

  • Regular encoder cable inspection
  • Maintain proper cable routing separation
  • Verify grounding system annually
  • Monitor servo diagnostic parameters monthly

Common Mistakes

  • Splicing encoder cables instead of replacement
  • Ignoring EMI sources during troubleshooting
  • Swapping encoder types without parameter changes
  • Not performing reference position return after encoder replacement
