Fanuc Alarm 447 - n AXIS: HARD DISCONNECT (EXT)

Servo Alarm: Position Loop Error

Hard disconnection on the n-th axis external encoder. Check external encoder cable, connectors, and encoder power supply.

Root Cause Summary

Fanuc Alarm 447 indicates a hard disconnection detected on the external (separate) encoder feedback system for the specified axis. This occurs when the servo amplifier loses communication with the external encoder, typically due to cable damage, loose connectors, encoder power loss, or encoder hardware failure. The alarm protects the axis from running open-loop without proper position feedback.

Safety

  • Position accuracy affected
  • Verify position before machining
  • ⚠️ CRITICAL: Position accuracy compromised - verify all positions before machining operations
  • Electrical Hazard: Disconnect power to the machine before working on electrical components. Lockout/Tagout procedures must be followed.
  • Mechanical Hazard: Moving axes can cause serious injury. Ensure all safety guards are in place and functioning properly before operating the machine.
  • High Voltage: Servo drives operate at high voltage. Use extreme caution when working around servo drives.
  • Ensure the machine is properly grounded to prevent electrical shock.

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Power off the CNC and verify all external encoder cable connections at both the encoder head (linear scale or rotary encoder) and the servo amplifier feedback connector (typically JD1A or JD1B on Alpha series amplifiers). Check for bent pins, contamination, or loose latches.

Lock out machine power using LOTO procedures before inspecting connections.

  2. 2

Inspect the external encoder cable along its entire length for physical damage, pinch points, sharp bends near cable carriers, or areas rubbing against machine components. Check cable shielding continuity.

  3. 3

If available, temporarily swap the external encoder cable with a known good spare or from a functioning axis to isolate cable failure. Ensure cable part number and pinout match exactly for the encoder type (1Vp-p, TTL, EnDat, BiSS, etc.).

  4. 4

Check diagnostic screen SYSTEM > DIAGNOSIS > SERVO > [Axis] for external encoder feedback signals. Monitor parameters 300-303 (position deviation) and diagnosis screen #400-#409 (encoder pulse monitors) while manually rotating the axis to verify signal activity.

Call a technician if:

  • ·Encoder replacement required
  • ·Servo amplifier hardware failure
  • ·Complex parameter issues
  • ·Mechanical repairs needed

Prevention

  • Regular encoder cable inspection
  • Maintain proper cable routing away from high-current wires
  • Keep encoder connections clean and tight
  • Follow preventive maintenance schedule for mechanical components

Common Mistakes

  • Ignoring loose cable connections
  • Using non-shielded encoder cables
  • Incorrect encoder power supply settings
  • Not backing up parameters before changes
