Fanuc Alarm 445 - Encoder Hardware Fault

Encoder Hardware Error

Fanuc alarm 445: Encoder Hardware Error. The encoder (pulse coder) on the specified axis has detected a fault condition. Position feedback cannot be reliably obtained until the encoder issue is resolved.

Root Cause Summary

Fanuc Alarm 445 indicates a soft disconnection or marginal communication between the servo amplifier and the pulse coder (encoder) on the specified axis. This is a pre-failure warning that the encoder feedback signal quality has degraded but has not completely failed. The alarm typically results from cable damage, loose connections, electromagnetic interference, or a failing encoder.

Safety

  • Encoder replacement requires homing

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Power OFF the CNC. Inspect the pulse coder cable from the motor encoder to the amplifier connector (typically JD1A/JD1B on α-series servo amplifiers). Check for cable pinching, excessive bending near cable tracks, oil contamination, or physical damage to the cable jacket.

Ensure SERVO OFF and all motion is stopped before handling cables

  2. 2

Disconnect the pulse coder connectors at both the motor (circular connector) and amplifier (D-sub). Inspect pins for bending, corrosion, or debris. Verify secure locking mechanism engagement. Measure cable continuity and insulation resistance if multimeter available.

  3. 3

Check cable routing to ensure minimum bend radius (typically 10x cable diameter) is maintained and separation from power cables, spindle motor cables, and AC lines. Shield must be grounded at amplifier end only to prevent ground loops.

  4. 4

If cable damage is suspected, replace with genuine Fanuc pulse coder cable (part number specific to motor model and cable length). After replacement, navigate to DIAGNOSIS > SERVO > check parameters 300-303 (encoder serial communication status) to verify clean communication.

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Pulse coder replacement required
  • ·Oscilloscope signal analysis needed
  • ·Parameter restoration from backup required

Prevention

  • Regular cable inspection during PM
  • Maintain proper cable routing and separation
  • Keep connectors clean and properly torqued
  • Monitor diagnostic screens for early warning signs

Common Mistakes

  • Grounding shield at both ends creating ground loops
  • Using non-FANUC cables with wrong impedance
  • Ignoring intermittent alarms until complete failure
  • Not checking parameter settings after motor replacement
