Fanuc Alarm 387 - n AXIS: ABNORMAL ENCODER (EXT)

FANUC ALARM 387

Abnormal signal detected in the external encoder on the n-th axis. Check encoder installation, cable, and connections.

Root Cause Summary

Fanuc Alarm 387 indicates the CNC has detected an abnormal signal from the external encoder (separate detector) on the specified axis. This typically occurs when the external encoder feedback signal is lost, degraded, or contains irregular pulse patterns that fail the servo amplifier's internal diagnostics. Common causes include encoder cable damage, poor connections at the amplifier or motor, encoder power supply issues, or mechanical damage to the external encoder itself.

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Power off the machine and visually inspect the external encoder feedback cable from the encoder head to the servo amplifier JD1A or JD1B connector. Check for cuts, pinch points, excessive bending near connectors, or damage in cable tracks.

Lock out main power and wait 5 minutes for capacitor discharge before handling servo amplifier connections.

  2. 2

Disconnect and reseat the external encoder cable at both the encoder head and the servo amplifier JD1A/JD1B connector. Inspect connector pins for damage, bent pins, or contamination. Verify locking mechanism is fully engaged.

  3. 3

Use a digital multimeter to check cable continuity on all encoder signal lines (A+, A-, B+, B-, Z+, Z-, shield) and verify no shorts between signal pairs or to ground. Replace cable if any conductor shows >1 ohm resistance or shorts are detected.

  4. 4

After reconnecting, navigate to DIAGNOSIS screen > Servo and monitor DGN#300-#307 (encoder feedback signals) while manually rotating the axis. Verify pulse counts increment smoothly without erratic jumps or freezing.

Call a technician if:

  • ·Amplifier replacement required
  • ·Encoder replacement needed
  • ·Multiple axes showing same alarm
  • ·Alarm persists after cable and connection verification

Prevention

  • Regular encoder cable inspection during PM
  • Maintain proper coolant sealing around encoders
  • Use only Fanuc-approved encoder cables
  • Implement proper EMI mitigation practices

Common Mistakes

  • Grounding encoder shield at both ends creating ground loops
  • Using incorrect encoder cable specifications
  • Ignoring intermittent connection issues
  • Failing to check amplifier parameters after encoder replacement
