Fanuc Alarm 386 - Spindle Speed Exceeded Maximum

Spindle Overspeed

Fanuc spindle alarm 386: Spindle Overspeed. The spindle speed has deviated beyond the allowable tolerance from the commanded value, or an abnormal speed condition was detected.

Root Cause Summary

Fanuc Alarm 386 indicates a serial communication error between the CNC and an external pulse coder (separate encoder) installed on the specified axis. This occurs when the encoder feedback data transmission is corrupted, interrupted, or lost due to cable issues, encoder hardware failure, or parameter misconfiguration in the serial encoder interface.

Safety

  • Overspeed is dangerous
  • Check spindle after alarm

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Power down the CNC system completely. Inspect the external encoder cable (typically separate from motor encoder) from the axis in alarm to the amplifier or CNC unit. Check for pinched, cut, or damaged cable sheathing, particularly near cable carriers and bend points.

Ensure LOCK OUT/TAG OUT procedures before inspecting cables near moving machinery

  2. 2

Verify all connector pins are not bent or corroded at both the encoder head and amplifier/CNC termination points. Reseat all connectors firmly and check locking mechanisms are engaged properly.

  3. 3

Measure cable continuity and insulation resistance using a multimeter with power off. Check each signal line for shorts to ground and adjacent wires. Replace cable if any faults detected.

  4. 4

Check servo amplifier LED indicators. A-97 or A-98 LED codes on the amplifier indicate serial encoder communication errors. If present, this confirms encoder signal path issue. Navigate to DIAGNOSIS > SERVO screen and check encoder feedback data registers for the affected axis to verify signal reception.

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Encoder replacement required
  • ·Amplifier hardware failure confirmed
  • ·Mechanical spindle bearing replacement needed

Prevention

  • Regular spindle encoder cable inspection
  • Periodic spindle bearing lubrication
  • Maintain proper parameter backup files
  • Monitor spindle speed feedback during operation

Common Mistakes

  • Adjusting speed limits without checking actual mechanical capabilities
  • Ignoring encoder signal quality degradation
  • Not backing up parameters before changes
  • Assuming alarm is always electronic rather than mechanical
