Fanuc Alarm 364 - n AXIS: SOFT PHASE ALARM (INT)

SERVO ALARM 364

Soft phase alarm detected in the built-in pulse coder on the n-th axis. Check pulse coder cable and connections.

Root Cause Summary

FANUC Alarm 364 indicates a soft phase alarm detected in the built-in pulse coder (encoder) on the specified axis. This alarm occurs when the servo amplifier detects phase signal errors from the serial pulse coder feedback, typically caused by encoder cable damage, loose connections, encoder contamination, or encoder hardware failure. The alarm protects against position feedback errors that could cause runaway or positioning inaccuracies.

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Power OFF the CNC and visually inspect the serial pulse coder cable from the motor to the servo amplifier (αi or βi series). Check for cuts, pinches, cable routing near moving parts, and excessive bending near connectors.

Disconnect all power and wait 5 minutes for capacitor discharge before handling cables or connections.

  2. 2

Inspect encoder connector at motor end and amplifier CN2 connector. Look for bent pins, contamination, corrosion, or loose locking mechanisms. Disconnect and reconnect firmly ensuring proper seating and locking.

Use proper ESD precautions when handling encoder connectors. Do not force connectors or bend pins.

  3. 3

Check diagnostic screen DIAGNOSIS > SERVO > select affected axis and observe encoder pulse counts while manually rotating motor shaft (power OFF, axis released). Counts should increment/decrement smoothly without jumps or erratic behavior.

  4. 4

If cable damage is found, replace the entire encoder cable with FANUC specified part number. After replacement, verify alarm clears and check servo amplifier LED displays steady green. Monitor DIAGNOSIS > SERVO > ALARM HISTORY for recurring alarms.

Call a technician if:

  • ·Motor or amplifier replacement required
  • ·Oscilloscope testing needed
  • ·Parameter backup/restoration required
  • ·Multiple axes affected simultaneously

Prevention

  • Regular encoder cable inspection and cleaning
  • Proper cable routing with adequate strain relief
  • Maintain proper system grounding
  • Keep encoder cables separated from power cables
  • Monitor motor operating temperatures

Common Mistakes

  • Grounding encoder cable shields at both ends
  • Using non-Fanuc replacement cables
  • Ignoring intermittent connection issues
  • Testing encoder circuits with power applied
  • Modifying encoder parameters without backup
