Fanuc Alarm 372 - REFERENCE RETURN INCOMPLETE

FANUC ALARM 372

An attempt was made to perform automatic return to reference position on the orthogonal axis before completing the return on the angular axis.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 372 occurs on machines with angular/orthogonal axis configurations (rotary tables, tool changers, or compound machines) when the CNC detects an attempt to reference the orthogonal (linear) axes before the angular (rotary) axis has completed its reference return. This is a programmatic or parameter-driven interlock to ensure proper axis dependency during homing sequences.

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Check DIAGNOSIS > PARAMETER > #0300 (Reference Position Return Completion) bits for each axis to verify which axes have completed reference return. Bit pattern shows completion status per axis.

  2. 2

Access SYSTEM > PARAM > #1815 (reference return sequence setting). Verify bits are set correctly for your angular axis configuration. If bit for angular axis is ON, that axis MUST complete reference before orthogonal axes.

  3. 3

Perform manual reference return in correct order: First execute REF on the angular/rotary axis (A, B, or C axis), wait for completion, then reference orthogonal axes (X, Y, Z).

  4. 4

    If using G28 in program, ensure angular axis movement is commanded and completed in a separate block before linear axis G28 commands. Example: N10 G28 C0; then N20 G28 X0 Y0 Z0;

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Parameter changes don't resolve alarm
  • ·Encoder or amplifier hardware failure suspected
  • ·Multiple servo alarms present

Prevention

  • Always complete angular axis reference return before orthogonal axes
  • Regularly backup parameter settings before modifications
  • Monitor encoder battery voltage monthly

Common Mistakes

  • Changing parameter 1815 without understanding axis priority
  • Ignoring REF lamp status before commanding reference return
  • Using G28 for all axes simultaneously in programs
