Fanuc Alarm 368 - n AXIS: SERIAL DATA ERROR (INT)

BUILT-IN PULSE CODER SERIAL ERROR

Serial data error detected in the built-in pulse coder on the n-th axis. Check serial communication cable.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 368 indicates a serial communication failure between the servo amplifier and the built-in absolute pulse coder (serial encoder) on the affected axis. This is typically caused by damaged encoder cables, connector issues, encoder failure, or less commonly, amplifier communication circuit failure.

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Power off the machine. Inspect the encoder cable from the motor to the amplifier (Alpha/Beta series). Check for physical damage, sharp bends, oil contamination, or worn insulation especially near cable carriers and motor connections.

Always power down before disconnecting encoder cables to prevent damage to encoder circuits.

  2. 2

Disconnect and reconnect the encoder connector at both the motor (typically JE connector) and amplifier encoder input (JD connector on amplifier). Clean contacts with electrical contact cleaner if contamination is visible. Ensure locking mechanisms engage fully.

  3. 3

Check encoder cable continuity and isolation resistance using a multimeter. Measure pin-to-pin continuity and insulation resistance (should be >10MΩ between signal lines and shield). Replace cable if readings are abnormal.

  4. 4

After cable verification, power up and navigate to DIAGNOSIS > SERVO screen. Monitor diagnostics #300-#30F (servo serial communication status) and #400-#40F (amplifier status) for the affected axis during operation to verify stable communication.

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Encoder replacement required
  • ·Servo amplifier replacement needed
  • ·Oscilloscope measurements required
  • ·Multiple axes affected simultaneously

Prevention

  • Perform monthly encoder cable connection inspections
  • Maintain proper cable routing away from power lines
  • Monitor servo amplifier temperatures
  • Keep encoder areas clean and dry

Common Mistakes

  • Connecting/disconnecting encoder cables with power on
  • Grounding cable shield at both ends
  • Using incorrect encoder parameters
  • Ignoring intermittent connection issues
