Fanuc Alarm 220 - ILLEGAL COMMAND IN SYNCHRO-MODE

ILLEGAL COMMAND IN SYNCHRO-MODE

Fanuc PS220: An illegal command was used while synchronous axis control mode is active. Certain G-codes and functions cannot be commanded while axes are in synchronous control.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 220 occurs when the NC program or PMC attempts to command independent axis movement on an axis that is currently engaged in synchronous control mode (such as tandem, gantry, or synchronized spindle operation). The control system locks out individual axis commands during synchronized operation to prevent desynchronization and mechanical damage.

Safety

  • Part support affected

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Review the NC program at the alarm line. Check for direct axis commands to the synchronized slave axis (commonly U, V, W or secondary channel axes). Verify program structure ensures G51.2 (synchronous control OFF) is executed before commanding the slave axis independently.

  2. 2

Navigate to SYSTEM > PARAM and check parameter 1260 (synchronous control axis specification). Verify which axes are defined as master/slave pairs. Note the slave axis designation.

  3. 3

Check parameter 1261 (synchronous control mode) to confirm the synchronization type (0=not used, 1=tandem control, 2=gantry control). Ensure program logic matches the configured mode.

  4. 4

Correct the program by removing direct slave axis commands during synchronized operation, or add G51.2 P0 (synchronous control OFF) before commanding slave axis, then G51.2 P1 (synchronous control ON) to re-engage synchronization when needed.

Disabling synchronous control on gantry systems can cause mechanical binding. Ensure both axes are positioned identically before re-engaging.

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·PMC ladder logic modification required
  • ·Parameter changes needed beyond basic settings
  • ·Hardware encoder or I/O module failure suspected

Prevention

  • Always cancel synchronous operation before commanding tailstock movement
  • Use proper M-codes to sequence spindle and tailstock operations
  • Implement adequate delays in program transitions between synchronized and independent operations

Common Mistakes

  • Modifying program sequence without understanding synchronization requirements
  • Ignoring PMC interlock signals when troubleshooting
  • Changing synchronous parameters without proper documentation
