Fanuc 223 - Servo off during synchronous control

SERVO OFF DURING SYNCHRONOUS CONTROL

Fanuc PS program alarm 223: SERVO OFF DURING SYNCHRONOUS CONTROL. This alarm is triggered by an illegal or incorrectly formatted command in the part program, or a programming condition that the Fanuc control cannot execute.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 223 occurs when the servo system is turned off (via emergency stop, servo off switch, or power interruption) while synchronous control operations are active. Synchronous control requires continuous servo power to maintain coordinated motion between multiple axes or spindles, and any interruption triggers this protective alarm to prevent system damage or loss of synchronization.

Safety

  • Verify corrected program or parameters before resuming machining

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Check if E-stop was pressed or servo off switch was activated. Reset E-stop and ensure all safety circuits are closed.

  2. 2

Review the part program to identify synchronous control commands (G51.2 for spindle sync, G52 for tandem axes, or machine-specific sync functions). Note the active mode when alarm occurred.

  3. 3

Clear the alarm and perform a controlled restart. If sync operation was interrupted mid-cycle, manually jog axes to safe position before attempting automatic operation.

Do not resume synchronous operations until all axes are properly homed and position verified

  4. 4

Verify synchronization by running the program in single block mode through the sync activation sequence. Monitor servo ready signals and sync status on the diagnostics screen.
