Fanuc 215 - Illegal axis command in superimposed control

ILLEGAL AXIS COMMAND IN SUPERIMPOSED CONTROL

Fanuc PS program alarm 215: ILLEGAL AXIS COMMAND IN SUPERIMPOSED CONTROL. This alarm is triggered by an illegal or incorrectly formatted command in the part program, or a programming condition that the Fanuc control cannot execute.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 215 occurs when the CNC detects an incompatible or illegal axis command while superimposed control (manual handle override during program execution) is active. This typically happens when the program attempts to command an axis movement that conflicts with superimposed control mode restrictions, such as circular interpolation, threading, rigid tapping, or axis commands that cannot be safely interrupted or modified by manual intervention.

Safety

  • Verify corrected program or parameters before resuming machining

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Review the program line indicated in the alarm display and verify if G02 or G03 commands are present in blocks where superimposed control is active.

  2. 2

Check parameter 12101 (superimposed control axis selection) to confirm which axes have superimposed control enabled and verify program compatibility.

  3. 3

Modify the program to deactivate superimposed control (G201.6) before circular interpolation blocks, then reactivate (G200.6) afterward if needed.

Test modified program in single block mode to verify proper execution before full auto run.

  4. 4

If circular moves are essential during manual intervention, consider redesigning the process to use linear approximation (G01) segments instead of arcs in critical sections.
