Fanuc Alarm 213 - ILLEGAL COMMAND IN SYNCHRO-MODE

PROGRAM ALARM 213

In feed axis synchronous control, the program issued a move or manual operation command to the slave axis, or automatic reference return was commanded without first performing manual reference return.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 213 occurs when the CNC detects an illegal motion command directed at a slave axis during synchronized feed axis control (tandem/gantry mode), or when automatic reference return (G28) is commanded without first performing manual reference return on synchronized axes. The master-slave relationship is violated by attempting direct control of the slave axis.

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Check parameter 1801#0 (synchronous control enable) and parameters 8201-8208 (master/slave axis definitions). Navigate SYSTEM > PARAM > search 1801 and 8201. Identify which axis is master and which is slave.

  2. 2

Review the active part program at the line where alarm occurred. Verify no direct motion commands (address codes like X, Y, Z, A, B, C) are programmed for the slave axis. Only program the master axis when synchronous control is enabled.

  3. 3

If slave axis motion is required independently, insert M-code to disable synchronous control (custom macro or parameter 1801#0=0) before commanding slave axis, then re-enable after operation completes.

Disabling synchronous control during machining operations may cause gantry racking or tandem axis desynchronization. Use only during setup or non-critical moves.

  4. 4

Clear alarm, return to program start or safe line before synchronous section, and restart cycle with corrected program containing only master axis commands.

DIY Feasiblehigh confidence

Call a technician if:

  • ·Parameter changes required beyond operator access level
  • ·Mechanical synchronization issues suspected
  • ·Repeated alarms after parameter corrections

Prevention

  • Always cancel synchronous control (G28.1 P0) before independent axis operations
  • Complete manual reference return before using automatic reference return in synchronized systems
  • Verify synchronous control parameters match mechanical configuration

Common Mistakes

  • Attempting to jog slave axis while sync mode active
  • Using G28 without prior manual reference return
  • Incorrect master/slave axis parameter assignment
