Siemens 6451 - Block tool change not possible. No buffer magazine defined.

Block tool change not possible. No buffer magazine defined.

The desired tool change is not possible. No buffer magazine defined Control reaction: Correction block is reorganized. Interface signals are set. Alarm display.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 6451 is triggered when the NCK attempts to execute a tool change command (T-word or M6) but no buffer magazine has been configured in the machine data. The SINUMERIK control requires MD 20050 (Tool change type) to be set appropriately and corresponding buffer magazine parameters to be defined for the tool change to proceed.

Safety

  • Only qualified personnel should diagnose and clear control alarms; follow the machine builder's safety procedures and lockout/tagout where hardware work is required.

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Access Siemens HMI > Diagnostic > Machine Data > search MD 20050 (Tool change type). Verify the current setting matches your machine hardware configuration.

  2. 2

If MD 20050 is set to automatic changer mode (value 1-5), check MD 20150 (Number of buffer positions in buffer magazine) to confirm it is populated with a value > 0. If MD 20150 = 0 or empty, this is the root cause.

Do not modify MD 20050 without verifying hardware compatibility

  3. 3

In NCK > Tool > Magazine configuration menu, verify that buffer magazine geometry parameters are defined: MD 20151 (Buffer magazine type), MD 20152 (Position arrangement), and MD 20153 (Magazine capacity). All must have valid values.

  4. 4

After correcting machine data, perform a Control > Initialize > Warm restart to reload NCK parameters. Then retry the tool change command (T-word + M6).

Warm restart will interrupt current program execution
