Siemens 6452 - Block tool change not possible. Tool holder/spindle number =

Block tool change not possible. Tool holder/spindle number =

The desired tool change is not possible. The toolholder/spindle number has not been defined Control reaction: Correction block is reorganized. Interface signals are set. Alarm display.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 6452 occurs when the NCK attempts to execute a tool change (M6 command) but cannot identify a valid tool holder or spindle assignment for the requested tool. This is a configuration issue where the tool changer interface parameters or spindle/tool holder linkage has not been properly defined in the machine data.

Safety

  • Spindle hazard: ensure the spindle is at standstill before working near it; follow lockout/tagout procedures.

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Access Siemens HMI > Diagnostics > Machine Data (MD) menu. Navigate to MD 32100 and verify TOOL_CHANGER_TYPE is set to a valid value (0=no changer, 1=ATC, 2=manual, etc.). Document the current setting.

Do not modify MD values without supervisor authorization; changes require a machine restart.

  2. 2

Check MD 32110 (TOOL_HOLDER_NUM) to confirm the spindle/tool holder number matches the T-word value in the NC program and the physical tool changer configuration. Cross-reference against your tool changer documentation for valid holder IDs.

  3. 3

Verify MD 32120 (SPINDLE_NO) and MD 32130 (SPINDLE_OFFSET) are defined and correspond to the spindle used for tool changes. On multi-spindle machines, ensure the correct spindle index is referenced.

  4. 4

If parameters are undefined or zero, set them to match your tool changer configuration per the machine builder's documentation, then perform a warm restart (Siemens HMI > System > Restart).
