6454

Siemens 6454 - Block tool change not possible. No distance relation available.

Block tool change not possible. No distance relation available.

The desired tool change is not possible. Neither the spindle nor the buffer magazine location have a distance relation Control reaction: Correction block is reorganized. Interface signals are set. Alarm display.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 6454 occurs when the NCK cannot establish a valid distance relation (Bahnverhältnis) for automatic tool change execution. The spindle position or ATC buffer magazine location lacks the necessary geometric relationship data to perform the tool exchange safely without collision.

Safety

  • Only qualified personnel should diagnose and clear control alarms; follow the machine builder's safety procedures and lockout/tagout where hardware work is required.

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Access NCK Parameters via HMI: Navigate to Diagnostics > Machine Data > Tool Changer Section. Verify MD20150 (Tool changer type) and MD20160 through MD20175 (distance relations, spindle offset, magazine geometry) are populated with valid numeric values, not zero or blank entries.

Do not modify machine data without backing up current configuration via SINUMERIK Operate backup function.

  2. 2

Check Part Program: Verify the T-word (tool call) in the block contains a valid tool number corresponding to a tool defined in the tool table (SD54100-series for Tool Management). Use Cycle > Tool Management menu to confirm tool and magazine slot assignments exist.

  3. 3

Verify spindle reference position is defined: Check MD10210 (spindle axis assignment) and confirm the spindle Z-axis home position (MD20200 - Spindle reference point) aligns with the tool changer's approach distance. Manually jog spindle to known safe position and update reference if needed.

  4. 4

Reload machine data and soft-reset the NCK: Press Control Panel > System > Reload Parameters, then perform a warm restart (not cold). Re-run the tool change cycle to confirm distance relation is now recognized.
