Siemens 840D 6450 - Channel block tool change not possible. Invalid magazine

Channel block tool change not possible. Invalid magazine

Siemens SINUMERIK alarm 6450: Channel block tool change not possible. Invalid magazine. This alarm indicates a fault or error condition on the SINUMERIK 840D control. Refer to the Siemens SINUMERIK alarm documentation for the complete description and remedy.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 6450 fires when a TCI (Tool Change Intermediate) command attempts to access an invalid magazine location—either the active spindle/toolholder position or an empty buffer slot. The NCK rejects the magazine index because only valid gripper/buffer positions (excluding spindle location 0) are permitted for intermediate tool changes.

Safety

  • Refer to Siemens documentation
  • Ensure qualified technician performs repairs

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Review the NC program block %2 for the TCI command syntax. Verify the magazine location parameter is not 0 (spindle position). Check Tool Table (TOOL.TBL) and TOOLC.DEF for valid buffer indices.

  2. 2

Access Diagnostics → Tools → Magazine/Gripper via HMI or NCK menu. Confirm active tool position and available gripper/buffer slots. Spindle location should not be addressable via TCI.

  3. 3

Modify NC program: replace TCI command with correct gripper buffer index (typically 1–N, where N is total buffer count). Consult machine documentation for valid magazine zone assignments.

Do not program TCI with index 0 or any spindle-equivalent location.

  4. 4

Perform single-block test run (cycle start in JOG, TEACH, or DRY RUN mode). Monitor alarm log (Diagnostics → Service → Alarm History) to confirm 6450 no longer fires.
