Siemens 4215 - Spindle declaration as modulo axis missing
Alarm 4215 occurs when a spindle is configured to operate in modulo mode (typically for rigid tapping or electronic gearing) but the corresponding modulo axis declaration is missing from the machine data configuration. The NCK cannot establish the required axis linkage for spindle positioning without the modulo axis being properly declared in MD10200 (axis name assignment) or equivalent channel configuration parameters.

Spindle declaration as modulo axis missing
The spindle functionality requires a modulo axis (positions in [deg]) Control reaction: Mode group not ready. Channel not ready. NC Start disable in this channel. Interface signals are set. Alarm display. NC Stop on alarm.
Root Cause Summary
Alarm 4215 occurs when a spindle is configured to operate in modulo mode (typically for rigid tapping or electronic gearing) but the corresponding modulo axis declaration is missing from the machine data configuration. The NCK cannot establish the required axis linkage for spindle positioning without the modulo axis being properly declared in MD10200 (axis name assignment) or equivalent channel configuration parameters.
Safety
Causes and Fixes
Access Siemens SINUMERIK HMI > Diagnosis > Parameters > Machine Data (MD). Navigate to MD10200 (Axis name assignment) for the affected channel and verify that a modulo axis is declared (e.g., 'C' for C-axis). Check MD10210 (Axis type) to confirm the axis is defined as rotary (type 2 or 3).
Do not modify MD values during active machine operation; ensure the machine is in manual or diagnostic mode.
Verify spindle-to-axis linkage in channel-specific parameters: check MD14620 (spindle number assignment) and MD14630 (spindle modulo axis) for channel %1. Confirm that MD14630 references the correct modulo axis name (must match MD10200 declaration exactly, case-sensitive).
Mismatch between spindle assignment and modulo axis reference is a common configuration error.
If the modulo axis is missing entirely, create the axis declaration: in HMI navigate to Axis > New > define axis type as rotary with 360° modulo range. Assign it a unique axis name (e.g., 'C') and confirm MD10200 and MD10210 are populated. Then re-assign spindle modulo reference in MD14630.
After configuration changes, perform a machine data backup (via Data > Backup) and reload all parameters via NCK reset (menu > System > Reset NCK) or power cycle. Verify alarm clears and spindle positioning functions respond correctly in manual mode before resuming production.
