Siemens 840D 4220 - Channel spindle declared repeatedly

Channel spindle declared repeatedly

Siemens SINUMERIK 840D system notice 4220: Channel spindle declared repeatedly. This is a system-level notification regarding machine data or configuration. Note the message details and take the indicated action.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 4220 occurs when a spindle identifier is declared multiple times within the same channel configuration. This violates the NCK channel architecture where each spindle assignment must be unique per channel. The alarm indicates a configuration error in the machine data (MD) spindle declarations or channel-to-spindle mapping.

Safety

  • Refer to Siemens documentation
  • Ensure qualified technician performs repairs

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Navigate to Diagnostics > Machine Data (MD) > 32000-series (Spindle Parameters) for the affected channel.

  2. 2

Review MD 32100 (SPINDLE_ASSIGN) and MD 32110 (SPINDLE_DATA_ADDRESS) entries. Verify that spindle numbers in column 'Spindle' are unique and do not repeat (e.g., Spindle 1 should appear only once).

Do not confuse spindle number with axis coupling. Check both the spindle identifier and the physical spindle reference.

  3. 3

If duplicates are found, modify the second occurrence to an unused spindle number (e.g., change from Spindle 1 to Spindle 2) or remove the duplicate entry if it is erroneous.

  4. 4

Save changes and perform an NCK reset (POWER ON/OFF cycle or use Diagnostics > Reset NCK). Verify alarm 4220 is cleared.

Machine must be in a safe state before reset. Ensure no active programs are running.
