Siemens 840D 4254 - PLCIO write error

PLCIO write error

Siemens SINUMERIK 840D system notice 4254: PLCIO write error. This is a system-level notification regarding machine data or configuration. Note the message details and take the indicated action.

Root Cause Summary

Alarm 4254 occurs when the NCK cannot successfully write data to the PLC input/output interface using FastPlcCom communication. This typically results from communication buffer overflows, corrupted FastPlcCom configuration, or PLC task synchronization failures that prevent proper handshaking between NCK and PLC domains.

Safety

  • Refer to Siemens documentation
  • Ensure qualified technician performs repairs

Causes and Fixes

  1. 1

Check MD 33100 (FastPlcCom_Enable) to verify FastPlcCom is properly activated. Confirm value is 1 (enabled).

If disabled, re-enable and perform warm restart (not cold). Cold restart may clear transient PLC state.

  2. 2

Verify PLC cycle time in PLC diagnostic menu (Siemens HMI > Diagnostics > PLC > Cycle Time). Ensure PLC cycle time is significantly shorter than MD 33110 (FastPlcCom_Timeout in ms). Standard ratio is 1:5 minimum.

If PLC cycle time is erratic or exceeds 50% of timeout value, investigate PLC load and OB1 execution time.

  3. 3

In NCK > PLCIO menu, review active write operations to PLCIO memory addresses. Reduce write frequency or consolidate multiple single-byte writes into word-aligned block writes to decrease buffer pressure.

  4. 4

Execute warm restart (Ctrl+F5 or HMI Restart > Warm) to reinitialize FastPlcCom state machine and flush buffers. Monitor alarm log for recurrence over 50+ PLC cycles.
